SCHOOL OF COMPUTING SCIENCES

History of computing discipline at VIT University dates back to 1993, when the Department of Computer Science & Engineering was established to meet the demand for well-qualified computer professionals. Subsequently, the Departments of Computer Applications and Information Technology were established. The School of Computing Sciences (SCS) was conceived in the year 2004-05 and came into existence by consolidating achievements and core strengths of the aforesaid departments. Since its inception, the SCS continues to be the biggest school of VIT University.

At present, the School headed by Prof. M. Khalid has more than 4200 students and 160 core faculty members apart from many visiting professors, distinguished professionals from industry, eminent researchers and teaching/ research assistants. With an aim to carve a niche for itself in Computer Science and Information Technology and allied domains, the School strives to:
  • Become a pioneering world-class centre of excellence in education and research through collaborative, consultative and participatory approaches

  • Nurture effective capabilities for the development of high quality technical and scientific manpower to meet the challenges of the knowledge era

  • Provide cost-effective Information and Communication Technology (ICT)-based solutions and value-added services to a variety of organisations and to meet the expectations of stakeholders

  • Foster a learning and creative community that strives to continuously advance the frontiers of knowledge and promote the deployment and usage of ICT-based applications for betterment of society.

The School offers research programmes such as M.S. (by research), M.Phil. and Ph.D. All engineering and MCA, M.Sc. programmes have been accredited by Institution of Engineering & Technology, UK (IET- formerly known as IEE, UK) during the year 2004-05.
The curricula of programmes have been designed to cater to the ever changing needs and demands of IT industry. The focus is on holistic learning and empowering students to make significant contributions at all levels. The cafeteria system of electives gives a handful of choices for students to develop expertise in their area of interest.

The school has one of the best infrastructure including domain-specific labs associated with the above technical divisions- many of these labs are sponsored by industry leaders e.g. IBM, Cisco, Sun Microsystems, Red Hat and Microsoft. The School has a good record of organising seminars, workshops, symposia and conferences in emerging technological areas. With an objective of developing core competence in the respective subject matter specialisations and special interest groups for learning newer technologies, the School has formed the following eleven technical divisions namely:
  • Computer Networks
  • Computer and Network Security
  • Parallel & Distributed Computing
  • Architecture & Embedded Systems
  • Software Engineering
  • Operating Systems
  • Database Management Systems
  • Intelligent Systems
  • Theoretical Computer Science
  • Image Processing, Graphics and Vision
  • Language Translators
